The question of which hotel to stay at is often raised. There are many hotels and many individual preferences, so that no one answer or opinion can be "correct."  I have rated  the hotels I have personally experienced within the Puerto Vallarta area  as follows (ratings are on a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being the best):

#1) The Westin* (rating - 8.0, add .5 if being close to town is important to you)

#2) Paradise Village** (rating 8.0, deduct .5 if being close to town is important to you)

#3) The Marriott **(rating 7.5, add .5 if being close to town is important to you)

#4) Fiesta Americana* (rating 7.5)

#5) Costa Vida Vallarta* (rating 7.5)

#6) Mayan Palace Marina* (rating 6.5 - add .5 if being near to town is important to you)

#7) Mayan Palace Nuevo Vallarta** (rating 6.5 - deduct .5 if being near to town is important to you).

#6) Velas Vallarta**(rating 6.5 - add .5 if being near to town is important to you)

#8)  Rancho Banderas* (rating 6.0 -- BUT would have rated  7.5 IF the construction was completed and the air conditioning had worked)

#9) Viva Vallarta (excellent grounds and pools, but the rating is 6.0 due to small rooms with no furniture and terrible (all inclusive) food)

#10) Villa Del Palmar* (rating 5.5 - add .5 if being near to town is important to you)

#11) La Jolla Mismaloya*(rating 5.0 ADD 1.0 if being out of town does not both you, add another .75 if you are a sound sleeper)

* - means I have stayed there

** - means I have NOT stayed there, but I have personally toured the grounds and been shown a room.
